I read with interest an article in Finextra about Bank of America’s latest encounter with PR cyber-jackers where if you go to bankofsatan.com you will be redirected to the bank’s website.
Obviously this has given good material for bloggers and tweeterati around the world to start talking about it. In marketing heaven this is what we’re all trying to do every day for ourselves and our clients (in our case).
I would love to be behind the analytics report for BoA and know how much traffic this has generated for the bank and compare it with any other campaigns they might be running. Then the question in my head is ” Is any traffic good traffic?”
In this particular case, at the expense of whichever person decided to register this domain and pull this stunt, the bank will have received some interesting hits to their website. For the right or wrong reasons? … hmmm that is for them to decide… all I know is that BoA will surely have enough PR clout to capitalise on this and will end up with an upper hand.
It also leaves me thinking? Whoever did this, did they really achieve what they wanted or did it backfire? How damaging can this really be for BoA? In my view I think it was a complete waste of energy from their part.
